SPEED BUMPS, BERMS & ETC.
Speed Bumps
are often used on
private property, when slowing traffic to a near stop
is the desired effect.
Speed Humps & Speed
Tables
are often used on secondary
public streets,
meet local City and County codes, are engineered safe to drive over and
won’t damage vehicle suspensions. Humps and tables are more visually than
physically effective at slowing traffic and discouraging short cutting.
Speed Humps & Tables have defined shapes, sizes and stripe specifications.
Humps require permits prior to installation on public streets. Asphalt Speed
Tables
are required instead of humps in areas frequented by fire trucks. Your local
street agency uses guidelines when deciding if humps or tables are the
requirement for a particular public street.
To find out more about the process of approval and permitting in your area,
call The City of Tucson at (520) 791-4259 or Pima County at (520) 740-2853.
The City and County are very helpful in explaining the process and fees and
will participate in certain aspects of installation.
Asphalt Curbs
are not recommended in Tucson. Vertically shaped,
unsupported pavements become soft and crush easily in our hot Tucson
climate. Asphalt curbs do perform as intended in many colder climates.
Berms
curvilinear in shape, perform fairly well in our hot Tucson Climate and are
used regularly to divert water run off.
